Nel dedicarmi alla cura di un volume sull’attività dello Studio Passarelli ho avuto l’occasione di acquisire una pluralità di informazioni e conoscenze relative a un periodo storico che tocca tre secoli: inizia alla fine dell’800, include tutto il ‘900, si estende nel 2000.

A seguito della stesura di queste brevi note introduttive del libro nonché della cura del volume, attività da me particolarmente sentita per la quale ringrazio Lucio Passarelli e tutti i componenti dello Studio di ogni epoca, invito il lettore a seguire il filo logico qui proposto, costituito dalla segmentazione dell'opera in periodi di dieci anni. Ciò al fine di avvicinarsi con uno sguardo continuo, ma al tempo stesso discreto, a un arco produttivo di lunghezza doppia rispetto a quella di un singolo progettista. Un'ultima riflessione sul presente e sul futuro. Dagli inizi degli anni '90, ovvero da quando il computer ha iniziato a diffondersi negli studi di architettura fino ad oggi - diventandone il tecnigrafo, l'archivio e parte della biblioteca - il confronto con l'innovazione si è fatto più serrato tanto da imporre a tutti, nessuno escluso, continue revisioni e aggiornamenti. Anche gli studi di architettura sono stati violentemente colpiti dal transito di questo "Angelus Novus" che ha prodotto effetti devastanti con il furioso vento che si è lasciato alle spalle. Ma qui un solco profondo che resiste alle tempeste è visibile, immutato, e la sfida che si perpetua nei prossimi decenni è quella di rispondere a tale rinnovamento valorizzando, come lo Studio Passarelli ha sempre saputo fare, gli elementi di continuità con il passato e, al tempo stesso, di innovazione verso il futuro. Facendo leva su una lunga, pienamente vissuta e autentica tradizione verso l'Architettura.

When I accepted the role of editing a book on the activities of the Studio Passarelli, I was offered an occasion to acquire a great deal of information and knowledge about a period of history that touches upon three centuries: it begins at the end of the 19th-century, spans the entire 20th-century and extends into the 21st.

Having completed this brief note of introduction to the book, of which I am also the editor - something for which I would like to thank all the members of the office, beginning with Lucio Passarelli - I invite the reader to follow the logical thread that divides the book into ten year periods. This division was considered to be the most appropriate means of approaching the Office's work in a manner that is continuous and discreet at the same time, and which spans a period of production that is twice as long as that of any single architect. I would like to make one last consideration on the present and the future. From the beginning of the 1990's or, more precisely, since the computer has invaded architectural offices - becoming the drawing table, the archive and part of the library - up to the present moment, the confrontation with innovation is ever more present, forcing each of us to confront a process of continuous modernisation and revision. Architectural offices are violently affected by the passage of this "Angelus Novus", whose furious winds of change have produced devastating effects. However, there remains a solid front line, both visible and unchanged, that continues to resist against the storm. And the challenge that will define the coming years is that of responding to these changes, as the Studio Passarelli has always known how to do: by valorising both the elements of continuity with the past and, at the same time, those of innovation that look towards the future, drawing on a lengthy, experiential and authentic tradition of making Architecture.
